Peaks Island Naturalist Tour
CAIRN BEACH
Discover the natural places that make Peaks Island unique and the community working to protect them
What makes this place special?
This rocky shoreline offers sweeping views and serves as an important stopover for migrating birds. Visitors often build stone cairns here as a form of artistic expression.
What challenges does it face?
Peaks Island's shoreline is feeling the effects of sea-level rise and stronger storms. Even small changes can affect wildlife habitat and coastal roads.
What islanders are doing
Community members are studying ways to strengthen shorelines and improve resilience while preserving natural coastal processes.
During your visit
Follow a "leave no trace" approach.
If you build a cairn, take it apart before leaving.
Leave rocks where you find them.
Avoid painting rocks and returning them to the shore.
