Welcome to Peaks!  We love this beautiful Island and hope you love it too.  In an effort to preserve this beauty for generations to come, here are a few helpful things to know…

Need to use the restroom?  We got you covered!

You can find fine public restrooms in the parking lot at the corner of Welsh Street and Island Avenue,at the Peaks Island Community Center, 129 Island Avenue, and in the shed by Trott Little John Park.  While our bear friends may use the woods, we’ve got these great facilities for our human friends. Please use them.

Just say no to camping!

We love folks that pitch in, but pitching tents and camping is against the law on Peaks Island and in the City of Portland.  If you need a great place to rest your head, check out the rental options at Ashmore Reality (https://ashmorerealty.com/peaks-island/)

Get Fired Up!

Want to build a fire?  You can do so, but by permit only and in compliance with city law. For details about getting a permit, call: 207-874-8575

Keeping it Beautiful!

Please take the ocean air in your lungs, Peaks’ shirts home in your suitcase, and great ice cream home in your belly.  But, please do not take rocks home in your socks, pockets, luggage, or otherwise.  The backshore and shoreline are protected under federal law so it can remain beautiful for our kids, their kids, their kids’ kids and way beyond.

Peaks is small.

 Bringing your own bike on the ferry is far less expensive than transporting a car to the island or renting a golf cart.  Or if  you prefer, leave your bike at home and rent from  Brads  Island Bike Rental and full service shop, 115 Island Avenue, 207-766-5631.

Not a biker?

The Island Community Taxi, a late model mini-van, (207-518-0000, https://peaksislandtaxi.org/about.html) meets all day-time ferries.  The nonprofit taxi can pick up wedding parties, give you a tour of the back shore, and deliver your groceries, freight, flowers, luggage, even your pizza!  Several island businesses use golf carts to provide tours as well.

A walk around the whole island takes a little over an hour.

The route  features rocky beaches on the back shore and access to Battery Steele.  The interior of the island features many hiking trails on conservation land. Where ever you go, please leave no trace, and pack out your trash.

If you must bring a car, know that our speed limit everywhere is 20 mph.

Take particular care near the island’s elementary school and Down Front, where pedestrians abound. Pedestrians, bikers and car drivers must follow normal rules of the road.  But it would be foolish to assume that others always will.  Prevent accidents by navigating with caution.  It’s a long way to the emergency room.
